Types of emergency facilities

Urgent care clinics are not emergency departments and are not included in this directory.

Hospital emergency department

An ER inside a hospital, with admission, surgery and specialists available in the same building. Some are part of a state-designated trauma center.

Freestanding emergency room

A licensed ER that is not physically part of a hospital. It can evaluate, test and stabilize patients, then arrange transfer. It is not a trauma center.

Pediatric emergency department

A hospital ER dedicated to infants, children and teens. Listings marked “Treats children” are confirmed by the facility.

How we verify listings

Independent directory. InjuryER is not affiliated with, owned by or paid by any emergency room, hospital or health system. We built it to help people who have been injured or in an accident find the nearest emergency care quickly.

Emergency room questions

Should I drive to the emergency room or call 911 after an injury?

Call 911 if the injured person is unresponsive, having trouble breathing, bleeding heavily, may have a head, neck or back injury, or is getting worse. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused or in severe pain.

Is the closest emergency room always the right one?

Not always. For major trauma, EMS may transport a patient to a designated trauma center even when another ER is closer. Distances in this directory are straight-line estimates from a ZIP code center, not driving times.

What is the difference between a freestanding ER and urgent care?

A licensed freestanding ER is staffed and equipped to evaluate emergencies around the clock and typically bills like a hospital emergency department. Urgent care clinics treat minor problems, keep limited hours and are not equipped for life-threatening conditions.

Will a freestanding emergency room accept my insurance?

It depends on the facility and your plan. Some freestanding ERs are in network with major insurers; others are out of network with all plans. The federal No Surprises Act generally protects patients from surprise balance bills for emergency services, but you may still owe your plan’s usual cost-sharing.

Does this directory show ER wait times?

No. Emergency departments treat patients in order of medical urgency, so posted wait times can change quickly. We do not publish wait-time claims.

Is InjuryER affiliated with any emergency room?

No. InjuryER is independent and not affiliated with, owned by or paid by any emergency room, hospital or health system.

Not affiliated with any emergency room. InjuryER is an independent information resource. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or compensated by the facilities listed, and we do not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Listings are compiled from official facility websites, health-system pages and state agency sources (such as the Texas Department of State Health Services trauma facility list), and each shows its last verification date. Hours, services, insurance participation and ownership can change; call the facility or check its official website before you go when your condition allows. A freestanding emergency room is not a trauma center unless state records say so. Listing order does not indicate quality, speed or wait time. If you think you are having a medical emergency, call 911.
